For Brookhaven, Mississippi native Tobias “2kToby” Maxwell, success has never been about luck—it’s been about consistency, vision, and putting in the work long after the cameras stop rolling. As an independent Hip-Hop and R&B artist, songwriter, marketer, and creative entrepreneur, 2kToby has spent more than a decade proving that determination can take an artist far beyond their hometown.
His musical journey began in the late fall of 2009 as one-half of the rap duo Xit-42 alongside fellow artist Yung BOS. The group’s name paid homage to Brookhaven’s iconic Exit 42, the highway exit that serves as both the entrance to and exit from the city they proudly represented. Those early years sharpened his artistry while laying the foundation for the independent brand he continues to build today.
By 2019, 2kToby was ready to introduce the world to his solo sound with the release of his debut single, “Baddies.” Rather than waiting for a major label or a large promotional budget, he relied on his own creativity and business instincts. He launched strategic social media campaigns, designed the official logo for his merchandise, and built a recognizable brand around his music. Every move reflected his belief that independent artists can compete at a high level by taking ownership of their careers.
His relentless work ethic soon began producing results. Through networking and self-promotion, 2kToby secured club placements for his music videos while expanding his audience beyond Mississippi. Earlier in his career, he was selected as one of only eight semifinalists from a field of 48 artists to perform at a showcase in Memphis, Tennessee—an achievement that confirmed his talent was beginning to gain regional recognition.
One of the defining moments of his career came through collaboration. Teaming up with fellow Mississippi artist Big Homie Fresh of Hazlehurst, the pair released the EP Winning Season, with Big Homie Fresh producing the entire project. More than just another release, the EP represented a powerful message: artists from neighboring Mississippi communities can unite, support one another, and create music capable of reaching audiences nationwide.
That vision quickly became reality.
Using his networking skills and relentless drive, 2kToby built relationships with DJs, radio stations, and music tastemakers across the country, helping propel the project’s standout single, “Back Shots,” onto multiple radio playlists and mixtapes. The record continues to gain traction, demonstrating the impact of strategic promotion, authentic relationships, and unwavering consistency.
Now, 2kToby is preparing to enter his next chapter with the upcoming release of his highly anticipated album, Bag and Bodywork. The project features the singles “Body Work” and “Twerk Sum” featuring Polo Baybee, giving listeners another glimpse into his evolving artistry while staying true to the sound that has earned him a loyal and growing fan base.
Beyond his own accomplishments, 2kToby remains committed to uplifting other independent artists. He believes collaboration is one of the strongest tools for building Mississippi’s music industry and continues to encourage creatives to network, support one another, and invest in their own success. His career reflects more than musical talent—it represents discipline, vision, and the determination to build something lasting.
