601 Day: How Jackson Turned an Area Code Into a Celebration of Community, Culture, and Pride

Written by: Chantal Taylor/ The Legacy Magazine MS

Every year on June 1, Jackson, Mississippi comes alive in a unique way. What began as a simple idea centered around the city’s iconic 601 area code has grown into a citywide celebration known as 601 Day—a day dedicated to honoring the people, businesses, artists, entrepreneurs, and culture that make Jackson special.

For many, 601 is more than just an area code. It represents home. It represents history. It represents community.

In recent years, 601 Day has evolved into a multi-day experience featuring local markets, live music, art exhibitions, food vendors, races, community gatherings, and special events designed to encourage residents and visitors alike to explore and support Jackson. The celebration has become a powerful reminder of the creativity, resilience, and pride that exist throughout the city. (Visit Jackson)

While many people assume one person created 601 Day, the event was actually born through collaboration. According to organizers, the concept came together after conversations among local creative leaders who believed Jackson deserved a celebration similar to area-code celebrations seen in other cities. The event was built through partnerships involving Visit Jackson, community organizations, local businesses, artists, and civic leaders. (Jackson Association of Neighborhoods)

Among the original organizers were community leaders and creatives including Philip Rollins of Offbeat, Stephen Brown of Briarwood Arts Center, Mary Sanders Ferris Cavicchi of Hal & Mal’s, Thabi Moyo, and members of the JXN Run Club team. Their shared vision helped transform a one-day idea into what has become one of Jackson’s most anticipated annual celebrations. (Jackson Association of Neighborhoods)

Now entering its fourth year, 601 Day continues to grow, drawing participation from artists, musicians, entrepreneurs, runners, neighborhood organizations, restaurants, and residents from across the metro area. What started as a local celebration has become a movement encouraging people to rediscover Jackson and support the businesses, venues, and community spaces that make the city unique. At its heart, 601 Day is about more than events and entertainment. It is about celebrating identity. It is about recognizing the stories, talent, and culture that have shaped Jackson for generations. Most importantly, it is about bringing people together under one shared message:

Jackson is worth celebrating.

As the city continues to evolve, 601 Day stands as a reminder that community pride can be a powerful force. One area code. One city. One celebration that continues to showcase the soul of Mississippi’s capital city.

Happy 601 Day, Jackson.
