The Unexpected Guest

Written by: Chantal Taylor

It was a quiet Thursday evening when Maya heard a knock at her door. She wasn’t expecting anyone. Curiosity outweighed caution, and she opened it to find an elderly man holding a small, worn-out box.

“I believe this belongs to you,” he said, his eyes twinkling with a mix of mischief and mystery.

Maya frowned. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen this before.”

“Maybe not,” he replied, “but it’s been waiting for the right moment.”

Hesitant but intrigued, she took the box. Inside was a folded letter and a tiny key. The letter read: “Some doors can’t be opened until you’re ready to face what’s inside.”

Her heartbeat quickened. She turned the key in the old lock at the bottom of her bookshelf—a lock she had never noticed before. As it clicked open, a faint light spilled into the room, revealing a hidden compartment filled with old photographs, letters, and trinkets from a life she had forgotten… her childhood. Memories she thought were lost came rushing back, each one a piece of her story she had never truly remembered.

Sometimes, Maya realized, the universe sends the right people—and the right keys—exactly when we need them.
