Born Donnell Hubbard on February 27, 1988, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Brutha Hubbard—widely known as the Sugar Daddy of Southern Soul—was raised in Gulfport, Mississippi, where his love for music and performance first began to take shape. Raised by his parents, Mr. Charles and Mrs. Saundra Hubbard, alongside his twin sister Danielle, brothers Randolph and Raymond, and older sister Gilda, Hubbard grew up in a close-knit family rooted in Southern culture, sound, and spirit.
A natural entertainer from an early age, Hubbard’s passion for music revealed itself long before he ever stepped into a studio. One of his earliest—and most memorable—moments came when he found himself in trouble at his local Head Start program for singing Marvin Sease’s “Candy Licker,” a moment that foreshadowed his future in soulful, grown-man blues. Alongside music, Hubbard excelled in athletics, playing both football and basketball during his youth.
After graduating, Hubbard took a more traditional path, working at a local Popeyes before later securing a job at a casino at the age of 26. While music remained close to his heart, it wasn’t until later that he fully stepped into his purpose. He initially explored rap under the name “Brutha,” but eventually discovered that blues—and more specifically Southern Soul—was where his voice truly belonged.
In 2019, Brutha Hubbard released his debut blues single, “Red Snapper,” marking a pivotal moment in his musical journey. The following year, he continued building momentum with a string of singles that resonated strongly with fans of the genre. His sound, style, and commanding stage presence have since earned him comparisons to Southern Soul and blues legends such as Marvin Sease, Tyrone Davis, and Pokey Bear.
