Blending authenticity, power, and grace, J’Cenae has emerged as one of the most dynamic voices in Contemporary Southern Soul and R&B. Born Jacqueline Cenae Williams on February 6, 1986, in Rolling Fork, Mississippi, J’Cenae’s musical journey began early. Raised in a household rooted in faith and love, she first showcased her talent singing in church, competing in talent shows, and performing in pageants.
Her early ambition led her to audition for American Idol in 2004, advancing through local and regional rounds in New Orleans and Denver. That same drive earned her a music scholarship to Alcorn State University, where she honed her craft as a member of the ASU Gospel Choir, Concert Choir, and the renowned Singers With A Purpose (S.W.A.P.). After leaving Alcorn in 2008, J’Cenae began her professional career performing background vocals for Southern Soul heavyweights such as Nathaniel Kimble and Chris Ivy.
By 2010, her undeniable stage presence caught the attention of the legendary Marvin Sease, with whom she toured until his passing. The experience fueled her passion and prepared her for the spotlight. Determined to make her mark, she pursued a solo career while continuing to collaborate with top artists like Vick Allen, Lacee, and Nellie “Tiger” Travis.

In 2016, J’Cenae released her debut single, “Good Stuff,” earning her a loyal fan base and regular bookings across the South. From Mississippi to Texas, her powerful voice and commanding stage presence made her a favorite at blues festivals, casinos, and live music venues. She has since shared the stage with industry icons including Tucker, Pokey Bear, Bobby Rush, Sweet Angel, Karen Wolfe, Magic One, Grady Champion, and Calvin Richardson—just to name a few.
A major turning point came in 2018 when she caught the attention of Wendell B, “The Boss of Southern Soul.” Their collaboration produced her breakout single, “I’ll Be Down in a Minute” (2019), which became a Southern Soul classic. The hit garnered national and international radio play, including airwaves in Africa, and earned J’Cenae a Jackson Music Award nomination for Best Engineered Track.
Continuing her upward climb, she teamed up with Mississippi star J-Wonn in 2022 for “Moving at Your Speed,” a smooth duet that further solidified her standing in the genre. In 2023, she took her career to the next level by launching her own record label, Raw Soul Muzik Group. Under this banner, she released “Set the Groove” and a follow-up single written by J-Wonn—both of which showcased her signature style and charisma. That same year, she was celebrated as one of the “Queens of Soul” by the Jackson Music Awards.

Now a Grammy Recording Academy Voting Member (Class of 2025) and three-time Jackson Music Awards National Female Artist of the Year, J’Cenae continues to break boundaries. Her upcoming sophomore album, The Evolution of J’Cenae, set for release on August 23, 2025, under Raw Soul Muzik Group, represents her growth, strength, and resilience as both an artist and a woman.
Already being considered by the Grammy Academy for Album of the Year and Best R&B Album, The Evolution of J’Cenae is a testament to her artistry and dedication to real, raw soul music. With every performance, J’Cenae proves she’s not just making music—she’s building a legacy that honors authenticity, empowerment, and timeless soul.
